Irish Drone Nationals 2016 Getting Ready with Leinster FPV ClubIn preparation for the Irish Drone Nationals 2016, which will be hosted by Leinster FPV Club, Skytango headed to Mondello Park on Saturday 13th August to check it out.

Skytango is Media Partner of Irish Drone Nationals 2016 and we were super-excited to hang out with the guys of the Leinster FPV Club, as they prepared to host this year’s event.

Last Saturday about 15 of Leinster FPV pilots got together to work the circuit in Mondello Park, County Kildare, Ireland for the upcoming race, to trial their IR timing gear and to discuss formats etc.

The circuit needs to be created in accordance with ERSA guidelines in order for it to be official.

The Irish Drone Nationals were held over the course of a single day in 2015 but this year will be held over a weekend with timed trials on Saturday and the official races on Sunday.

This adds to the overall workload but it will mean a very professional contest will be held in preparation for the European Cup in Ibiza.

While at Mondello last Saturday, the guys tested out their new ERSA approved IR timing system in preparation for the big weekend.

They purchased all the  flags, gates and props to set up a course and on Saturday they trialed the placement of these to make the course interesting and challenging for the pilots. They tested out the system with eight flyers in the air at the same time.

When they ran into difficulties, the whole group walked the track to iron out the problem. Once reset, the pilots were off again honing their skills while also testing the circuit.

The atmosphere was light-hearted with pilots taking turns to solder boards to their quad, charge batteries, get advice from other flyers, joke about, fly some more, repair a damaged quad, use diagnostics to figure out where a quad had problems, fly some more…. you get the idea.

Ultimately this is a sport taken seriously by Leinster FPV and they are working hard to make the Irish Drone Nationals 2016  a great contest, but also a fun filled adrenaline weekend.

There are spectator tickets available for €6 which covers the two days including car parking, click Spectator Tickets.

Irish Drone Nationals 2016

It is only the 2nd Irish Drone Nationals ever to take place and the 1st time the IDN will be held in Mondello Park, the home of super speed and adrenaline filled racing in Ireland.

We talked to Declan Healy of Mondello Park who said “We are delighted to help Leinster FPV Club host the Irish Drone Nationals, as many of our regular Drifting attendees, would also be drone racing enthusiasts”

The Nationals take place Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August, with the 1st day set aside for trials and seeding of racers with the big races on Sunday.

Keith ‘THORAX’ Tracey will again MC the event no doubt keeping everyone enthralled and entertained.

Race Director will be Jaak Pieterse, Chairman of Leinster FPV.

Only one winner will emerge from the Irish Drone Nationals and they will be crowned IDN2016 Champion.

They will follow in the footsteps of Slawek Zielinski, who was the 1st Irish Drone Racing Champion in 2015.  For those who don’t win the coveted title of ‘The Champ’, there is consolation. The top six pilots go forward to represent Ireland at the European Cup in Ibiza in October.

There will be four official races:

  1. Irish Championship Race (the main event)
  2. A Freestyle Competition (show off your signature style)
  3. Irish Micro FPV Champ (those little guys can fly fast: the current speed record is 182km/h set by Roboforcer X2000!
  4. Unofficial World Record attempt for fastest Mini-quad.

So far 34 drone pilots have registered.

If you would like to take part but have not yet registered, you still have a chance to do it before this weekend. There are only 50 places in total.
