We list the top drone magazines that are available to drone enthusiasts everywhere.

Whether you are a commercial drone pilot wanting to develop your skills, or an enthusiastic photographer purchasing your first drone, or you work as professional in the unmanned vehicle industry and are interested in the latest news in this constantly changing sector, you will find that one of these drone magazines fits the bill.

So how do you pick the right magazine for you?

First of all, make sure the magazine covers the topics you are interested in.

Some of the magazines on the list, such as Unmanned Vehicles or Unmanned Systems, offer a 360 coverage of the aerial, ground and maritime unmanned systems industry in the civil, commercial and military markets. They are essential resources if you are a professional involved in this industry.

Others, like RotorDrone Magazine or Drone Magazine, focus purely on the drone industry. These magazines are probably the best choice for drone pilots.

A drone magazine can be handy to have especially if you are purchasing an expensive drone for the first time. But even if you are a drone veteran, these magazines can be a great way to keep in touch with new technology trends and upcoming products. They can also be useful to help keep on top of the latest rules and regulations regarding UAS throughout the world.

Some magazines specialize even more, focusing for example on building drones or FPV racing, or covering academic research, like Journal of Unmanned Vehicle Systems.

To help you choose which drone magazine is for you, I have included a short description of each of them.

Most have both a print and digital edition so you also get to pick the format you prefer.

Many of the drone magazines have an up-to-date online blog you can subscribe to. Some of the magazines are free but none of them is particularly expensive, so I’d definitely recommend subscribing to at least one if you want to keep your finger on the pulse.

If I have missed a drone magazine you believe is very informative and useful, drop me a line and let me know!

 Top Drone Magazines

The drone magazines below are listed by readership data, and by circulation when readership is not available.

I have also listed a few drone magazines which have been recently discontinued. Most of them offer their back issues for free (in digital edition):

RotorDrone

rotordrone-magazine

RotorDrone claims to be the world’s number one drone media brand and sure enough, has managed to build a huge online community with a 720,000+ monthly audience. It’s one of my favorite magazines on this list and I’d really recommend you give it a try if you are a drone pilot.

This bi-monthly magazine targets drone “prosumers” – drone enthusiasts and pilots, whether they are beginners, FPV pilots or commercial drone operators (in particular working in the media industry).

What can you find in it? RotorDrone‘s content focuses on all types of multirotor aircraft news and reviews, accessories and must-have gear, including FPV drone racing, expert tips and how-tos from professional drone operators.

Their editorial calendar is well planned out a year in advance and each issue has a special focus. For example, Jan/Feb 2017 was focused on Drone Universities and career options. The latest issue in September 2017 covered drone video and photo techniques etc. They also publish 2 special issues per year – PhotoDrone and Drone Sports in 2017.

Their website is really active and they also send out their free RotorDrone Magazine newsletter every 2 weeks, which brings the latest multirotor news picked from the editors of the magazine. To get the newsletter, just subscribe using your email address on their website.

This bi-monthly magazine, published by Shepard Media which also releases the annual Unmanned Vehicles Handbook, delivers essential, in-depth and up-to-date coverage of technology developments and news related to unmanned systems and their civil, commercial and military applications.

It covers aerial, ground and maritime unmanned systems so if you are looking for specific info on how to fly your drone or improve your skills as a commercial drone operator, this might not be the best magazine for you, but if you are involved in the unmanned systems industry in other roles this is definitely one of the best resources around. Check their website – you might even qualify for a free subscription offered to senior personnel.

  • Readership: 27,000
  • Year of Launch: 1982
  • Type of Magazine: Print & Digital
  • Publishing Schedule: Bi-Monthly

Unmanned Systems has been an exclusive publication for AUVSI members for a long time, but since 2016 readers have been able to subscribe to the print publication through the new AUVSI website even if they are not AUVSI members. If you are happy enough reading online rather than on paper, you can even get the latest 12 issues for free on the AUVSI library! Established in 1982, Unmanned Systems magazine is the oldest magazine in circulation in the unmanned systems industry and covers civil, commercial and defence news worldwide, related to aerial, ground and underwater unmanned systems.

The magazine features short news and deeper information-packed long-form articles, a regular section about cutting-edge unmanned technologies, another section with photos taken by unmanned systems, and content on unmanned systems education and events worldwide.

Topics covered are similar to Unmanned Vehicles, but my impression is that Unmanned Systems is focusing more and more on the commercial sides, while Unmanned Vehicles still maintains a large military focus.

AUVSI also publishes a special Unmanned Systems issue for Xponential, the B2B drone event organized by AUVSI: over 5,000 copies were issued for Xponential 2017.

Inside Unmanned Systems is an amazing free magazine providing news and information to the global UAS/UAV drone community. Their readership mostly includes unmanned system engineers, system integrators, product designers and unmanned program and policy leaders. The articles are well-written and researched and I believe that most commercial drone pilots would enjoy reading them.

They have a bi-monthly online digital edition which offers news and analysis of the latest unmanned technologies and market applications, articles on policy, politics, programs, laws and regulations worldwide, and articles on innovations and technological advancements within the unmanned industry across the commercial, civil and defence sectors. The focus is actually more on the commercial and civil applications than the military ones.

Besides the latest news, the magazine features regular columns such as Washington View, focusing on the latest updates from the U.S. Congress that might impact on the UAS/UAV community (while the column Brussels View covers the market from a European perspective); Inside Markets & Products, covering new products and ideas; Inside Platforms, providing specific in-depth articles on air, land and sea unmanned platforms.

The website complements the bi-monthly online edition, offering regular updates and news from the industry. And did I mention that Inside Unmanned Systems is free? Don’t waste time and sing up for your copy today.

Drone360 Magazine (Discontinued)

drone360

  • Website: Drone360 Magazine
  • Circulation: 35,000
  • Readership: n/a
  • Year of Launch: 2016
  • Type of Magazine: Digital
  • Publishing Schedule: Bi-Monthly
  • Owned by: Kalmbach Publishing Co.
  • Price: $7.99 per issue

Directed by Tim Kidwell, Drone360 Magazine was a complete resource for anyone interested in drones, with content of interest for hobbyists, UAV business owners, FPV pilots, UAV insurance companies, and regulators. Unfortunately Drone360 – which was one of my favorite drone magazines – just closed. According to the publisher, the audience didn’t grow at the anticipated pace.

Drone360 was published by Kalmbach Publishing – an experienced company publishing several special-interest magazines. The editorial staff of the magazine contained a number of drone enthusiasts and experts, and the Drone360‘s Advisory Board was impressive, hosting several industry experts. Indeed, even if it was one of the most recent magazines in the drone industry, Drone360 Magazine was showing an impressive quality and quickly built up a strong reputation, so the news of its closure was disappointing.

Drone360 was sold as a print and digital magazine, but was also active online via a blog which featured pieces on trends and news, rules and regulations (focusing on the U.S. market), drone products reviews and drone videos and drone photographs. All the articles published online in the past are still available there, while new drone articles are now published on Discover Magazine rather than drone360mag.com.

Referred everywhere as “The Drones Mag“, the Drones magazine was a packed bi-monthly publication aimed very much at drone pilots. In particular, Drones offered lots of expert information to pilots who want to build and pilot their own drones whether they be Commercial Systems, FPV, Sport Multicopters, Ready to fly systems or Micro Quads. It was one of the best resources for DIY drone builders, and they also had interesting content for drone enthusiasts, such as deep technical reviews of accessories and drone-related hardware such as flight controllers, headsets, and ground stations.

Maplegate Media, the publisher, announced they would stop printing the magazine back in February 2017, with a plan to start again after a restructuring and reorganization phase. The original website – http://www.thedronesmag.com/ – has changed ownership and is not related to the magazine anymore.
