1,000 glowing drones illuminated the sky of Guangzhou on February 11th, 2017, setting up the new Guinness world record. Watch the enchanting video!

Celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, the Lantern Festival is one of the biggest celebrations in China and Chinese communities all over the world.

While the origin of the festival is surrounded by quite a few different myths and legends, everyone can agree that this is the celebration of good luck, fortune, and happiness.

This year, the beautiful 2000-year-old tradition met innovative technology and got the whole world mesmerized by the magical outcome.

Festivities, already filled with traditional mouth-watering food, fireworks, various folk custom performances, colorful lanterns and dancing dragons, were enriched by a magnificent display of 1000 illuminated drones.

The show was delivered by a successful collaboration between Tianhe (which means “a river in the sky”) district government in Guangzhou and one of the world’s leading drone manufacturers: Ehang.

For this impressive, Guinness world record breaking performance Ehang used their cute and compact Ghost Drone 2.0, weighing slightly over 1kg and known for its ease of use and 4K sports camera and very reasonable price, making it a perfect choice for beginners.

Operated by an automated computer system, this huge swarm of drones were up in the air for 15 minutes, keeping a 1.5-meter distance from each other in order to avoid collision.

The drones positioned themselves into neat and precise formations, creating multi-coloured images of the map of China, a rooster (2017 is the ”Fire Rooster Year” in Chinese calendar), Chinese character “福,” (which means “blessing”), among others. All this being accompanied by Yellow River Piano Concerto in the background.

It’s unclear whether Ehang’s plan was actually to beat the Guinness “Most UAVs airborne simultaneously” record (the previous one was won by Intel’s 500 drones in November 2016), or to attract the world’s attention to their ambitious and amazing project to launch a hover taxi service in Dubai this summer, but…we don’t care, do we? We loved that colorful and dynamic aerial display. It was awesome!
